Finding the perfect cup of coffee is easy, once you have tried some of the delicious different types of coffee that are available for purchase. It can be an overwhelming task as the options out there for purchase are mind-blowing! The key is to find your favorite blend, roast, or region, and then try different brands until you find your favorite. After that it is as simple as drinking a cup for some brewed happiness!
A great place to start trying coffee and finding your favorite kind is to start with the different roasts. Typically roasts are broken down into three sections: light, medium and dark. Depending on your personal palate you may be naturally more inclined to drink one over the other.
Light roasts are light brown in color, have toasted grain flavors and sharp acidic tones. These beans are said to have almost a tea-like flavor or character to them. Popular light roasts include cinnamon roasts and light blonde roasts.
Medium roasts are a deeper color in brown and have been roasted just until the beans crack. This roast is perfect for tasting the true and natural essence of the bean. This is also the most popular roast in the United States. This is what you will mostly find when shopping for coffee in the grocery store.
Finally, comes your dark roasts, which just happens to be my personal favorite. Dark roasts are very dark in color, and some are roasted until black and oily. These roasts have a very bittersweet taste to them and the acidity of the beans are muted in nature. Dark roasts are also known for being used in espresso, and espresso blends. If you are someone who enjoys those specialty coffee drinks with an espresso base, then you are drinking dark roast beans.
After you have distinguished what roast of coffee you prefer, you may find you are drawn to a particular region. A very popular coffee is Kona coffee that originates in the hills of Hawaii. This coffee is known for the robust flavor, earthy characteristics, with floral notes and a great balance. Another popular coffee is Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, which is also known as "Black Gold". This coffee is cultivated in Jamaica and is known for its full-bodied flavor, subtle acidity and smooth chocolate finish.
