Storing Fresh Seafood In A Foam Cooler To Keep It Cold

A Basic Approach On How To Pack Seafood In Foam Coolers
Here, we discuss an effective way to go about packaging seafood so that it stays fresh whether you're just coming in from a nice fishing trip or just buying a few pounds of fish, shrimp, crabs, clams, or other delicious seafood from a market. When you need a way to keep it fresh during a long drive or any other reason you can't refrigerate it right away, using a high quality foam cooler will get the job done properly.
Now, let's review a few supplies you're going to need...
High Quality Foam Cooler
You'll want to make sure that the foam cooler you use is at least 3/4 inch thick and "fully fused", meaning it wasn't rushed through the manufacturing process. This ensures that the container has better leak resistance.
Puncture Resistant Plastic Bags
Next, get several plastic bags large enough to easily hold your seafood cargo. The bags need to be at least two millimeters thick for better puncture resistance.
Freshly Caught Or Bought Seafood
Of course, you'll want to make sure that the seafood you catch or purchase is ready to be packed up and that it has been protected from exposure to remain fresh.
Zip Ties Or Other Tying Supplies
Have several zip ties or other tying supplies on hand in order to secure each plastic bag so that there are no spills or leaks.
Gel Pack Refrigerants
Using gel packs will allow you to use less ice, helping to lower the overall weight once everything has been packed in the cooler. You'll need enough gel packs to place on the sides and top of your bagged seafood package.
Bag of Ice
A standard bag of ice should be enough to use in a small to medium-sized foam cooler. The ice should not be exposed to heat that can cause it to start melting before it's used in the cooler. Ice that is already melting when placed in the cooler does more harm than good to your seafood.
Step One - Place Seafood Into Protective Plastic Bag.
Step Two - Remove excess air from the arrangement and twist the top of the bag in preparation for tying.
Step Three - Fold the tied end and tie it to secure the package.
Step Four - Repeat the process of bagging, twisting, folding, and tying so that your seafood is double-bagged or even triple-bagged if you wish.
Step Five - Add your ice to the foam cooler itself. There should be enough ice to cover the bottom of the cooler for the seafood package to rest on, but not so much that you cannot close the lid securely once everything has been packed.
Step Six - Place your seafood package so that it is resting on the ice.
Step Seven - Surround the seafood with gel packs and place at least one gel pack on the top.
Step Eight - Secure the foam cooler lid well so that warmer air does not cause ice to melt prematurely.
With a properly packed and secured foam cooler, your seafood catch or purchase should stay fresh for a minimum of 24 hours.
