The Health Benefits You Didn't Know: Oranges

0
By

Starting with the basics, the average orange(180g) has 85 calories, 21g of carbs; 4g of which are fiber and 17g are sugars, they surprisingly also have 2g of protein. For vitamins and minerals, they contain 160% of the Vitamin C we need, 8% of the necessary Vitamin A, 7% of the calcium, and 1% of the iron. Remember that it's based on a 2000 caloric diet.
Down to the elemental benefits...the orange has over 170 different kinds of phytonutrients and over 60 flavonoids. Typically thought as health boosters, these phytonutrients give oranges the orange color. They protect plants against bacterium and viruses too. Studies show that consumption of this reduces risk of terminal diseases. Flavonoids are antioxidants because of their polyphenolic compounds. They cause anti-flammation because of their antioxidant abilities also. These flavonoids also reduce terminal disease risks because they antioxidize.
In addition, the albedo(white stuff) is the most nutritious area for it provides much bioflavonoids and anti-cancer agents. Other nutrition the orange provides include iodine, beta-carotene, amino acids, and etc. though less significant.
Additional health benefits include antiarteriosyclerosis, liminoid which fights cancer, synephrine which reduces bad cholesterol, relieves constipation, repairs damaged sperm, reduced risk of heart disease, lowers high blood pressure through hesperidin, stimulation of white blood cells, prevents kidney stones, anti-aging, reduced risk of stomach ulcers, and protection against virus infections.
Now unto the orange peel. The typical orange peel in a 100g orange should have 161 mg of calcium, 1.5g of protein, and additionally contain potassium, riboflavin and vitamin A. Orange peels also contain most of the oranges beta-carotene which stimulates immune system, antioxidizes, and helps vision health. Orange peels also contain "orange oil" which is used in soaps and cleansers for the process of cleaning. This orange oil is a solvent which isn't chemically harmful like those other products. Medical purposes include simmering 1 to 2 g of dried peel in 3 cups of water for tea to help relieve indigestion and heartburn. Orange peels have also been used for insomnia and as a laxative.
So how should you eat oranges? Well, now that you know of their universal benefits, you should first peel it and eat the juicy inners. Make sure to eat as much of the albedo as you can. After that, you can sun-dry the peels to harden them. This brings out more of the natural sweetness within. Once it's sun-dried, eat the peel like candy, like in history.
So what now? Well, if you are interested, you can check out me and my blog, so you can find out more about this topic and I.

Differences in Ceviche in Latin America

0
By

Ceviche is a popular seafood dish served frequently throughout Central America, South America and Mexico. The cuisine is typically made by marinating raw fish, shrimp or lobster in citrus juices. Lime juice is the most common citrus used. The juices cook the seafood so it is edible. Recipes for ceviche are as varied as the countries where it is eaten.
In Peru and Ecuador, ceviche recipes are often created with a mixture of lime and orange juices. Octopus ceviche is considered a delicacy. Ceviche in these countries is often served over a bed of lettuce with tomato and onion and can be eaten with crackers. It is a popular lunchtime item and cevicherías (ceviche restaurants) are very easy to find. In Peru in particular, ceviche is probably the single most beloved dish eaten by locals. Visitors to Peru should try ceviche and any Peruvian's face will light up with delight when asked to recommend a good ceviche restaurant.
Ceviche recipes in Mexico include toasted tortillas and sliced raw onions that accompany the delicious sea food taste. Add an ice cold glass of beer on a hot day and your ceviche plate will taste heavenly and be very refreshing. Ceviche is not a very heavy meal which makes it ideal for visitors and locals alike with an afternoon full of sightseeing or work. A variety of sea food is used to make ceviche recipes in Mexico, including shrimp and octopus. Additional ingredients that are optional include garlic, onions, green peppers and hot peppers. Mexicans love eating ceviche as an appetizer or as a salad. Ceviche in Mexico is typically served in a red sauce, as opposed to the citrus juices of other countries. This is also true of the ceviche served in many Central American countries, such as El Salvador and Guatemala. If you are in one of these countries are prefer a ceviche made from lime juices, you may need to ask for directions to a restaurant that serves the ceviche Peruvian style.
In Chile, ceviche recipes include the use of grapefruit juices, mangoes, onions, chillies, prawns and cilantro. The ingredients are mixed together and cooled. Raw fish is cut into pieces and mixed in the various ingredients including lime juice. The citrus juice helps to cook the fish and give it a tangy flavor.
The size of your servings depends on the time of the day the ceviche is being eaten. It can be served in smaller portions as an appetizer or as a larger plate for lunch. Ceviche a real treat in areas closer to the ocean as the fish and seafood is usually fresher. However with a little persistence, trial and error, a ceviche lover can usually find a good restaurant in any larger city. Ceviche does not need to be prepared with fish caught from the ocean. Any lighter tasting fish caught from a stream or river is quite capable of mixing well and producing a delicious treat, no matter where it is caught.

I am pretty sure as a child we all remember our parents telling us to eat our fruit and vegetables, and now we want to pass that onto our kids, as living a healthy lifestyle becomes more and more important.
You know they should be eating well for the sake of their health, but as far as most kids go, they couldn't give a fig..it's just not important to them. The good news is you can get your kids to eat a healthier variety of fruit and vegetables by making a healthy smoothie for kids that not only tastes great, but looks great too. All you need to do is spend a few minutes each day coming up with some fruit smoothie recipes for kids to enjoy, and they will never know.
What is a Smoothie Anyway?
Essentially a smoothie is a blend of any fruit or vegetable, mixed with yogurt (I find Greek yogurt the best as, it gives a thicker creamier texture) and milk, plus either ice cream or ice. If you want this to work, then I suggest you use fruit to make a nice healthy smoothie for kids. The added extra of using fruit is that it already has natural sweeteners, and a taste we all love. My favourite tends to be strawberries or raspberries, but pretty much anything will work. You can even use frozen fruit to make your healthy smoothies for kids, as long as they are getting their 5 a day, right!
This will usually result in an attractive looking meal with a variety of bright colours (depending on the fruit that you choose). Do not be afraid to experiment with different ingredients, and let your kids help, they are more likely to eat something that they made themselves.
What do you need to make fruit smoothie recipes for kids?
To make a smoothie you will need the following:
  • A good quality smoothie maker or blender (the cheaper ones tend not to liquidize your fruit very well, this can leave unpleasant lumps or slices in the smoothie, making it more of a lumpy.
  • Fruit juice, orange usually works well, but you can use just about anything. I particularly enjoy using pineapple juice when inventing new fruit smoothie recipes for kids, as they like the sweetness of it.
  • Greek yogurt, I say Greek because it is thicker and creamier, but feel free to use any regular type you may have in the fridge also.
  • Either a few cubes of ice, or a large spoonful of ice cream if you are feeling a bit naughty.
Now, just chuck it all in the smoothie maker and blitz until smooth and creamy, and there you have it, some lovely healthy smoothies for kids and grownups alike.
So, go nuts and try a few fruit smoothie recipes for kids and see what they like. How cool is that, your kids will literally drink themselves healthy.
My kids love fruit smoothies and I am sure yours will too. For more information about healthy smoothies for kids and the health benefits of smoothies click here

Avoid Salty Foods By Using Spices and Reading Labels

0
By

The best way to avoid excessive salt, sugar and fat is to read labels. The best way to avoid reading that fine print is to eat produce. That's right. The time that you have been taking to read all those labels is better spent preparing a meal with lots of fresh produce that have no labels. Now it becomes a choice between whether you should buy organic or not. Sometimes, as with my budget, you cannot afford to go organic. Or can you?
Maybe it is time to think about gardening. Those green leafy vegetables are pretty easy to grow. Sweet peas, broccoli, cauliflower, and many lettuces can handle the cooler climates of spring. Planting near shade reduces the amount of hot sun as temperatures increase. It is a great feeling to pick your own salad all summer long.
Just because the food processing industry and restaurants do not want to spend the money to flavor foods with nutritional spices and herbs, doesn't mean that you can't do it yourself. I stopped buying flavored canned beans, when I remembered I used to spice the plain ones myself. A little mustard, some cumin, paprika or Liquid Smoke and I am satisfied that I have prepared them the way I like, avoided additives and, as a bonus, saved a bit of money. Plain tomato sauce can be spiced the way you want, and it's usually cheaper than the spaghetti sauces in a jar.
If you are retired, that means that you should have more time to avoid salt and eat healthier. So there is no excuse not to try gardening or buying more fresh fruits and vegetables. Gardening is good exercise. Start small and see if you feel the wonder of little sprouts and green leaves peaking out of the ground.
Part of the problem is that we all eat out too much and don't know what we are eating. You can look up most chain restaurants online and see how much salt, sugar and fat are in their menu choices. According to the Center for Disease Control these ten foods are responsible for almost half of the sodium/salt that we consume. They are breads and rolls, cold cuts, cured or processed meats, pizza, fresh poultry, soups, cheese, spaghetti and other pasta dishes, meatloaf and meat dishes and, finally, snacks like potato chips and pretzels.
It looks like what most of us consider for lunch or take-out food is not so good for us. Perhaps it is time to reconsider the salad. Pizza has lots of cheese and meats, which have lots of salt. Remember how thirsty you are after a pizza?
Canned soups are notoriously salty. Many have MSG or mono-SODIUM glutamate. Because of my husband's allergies, we gave up on canned soup ages ago. Avoiding sandwiches with salty bread, cheese and processed meats doesn't leave you with a lot of lunch choices other than salads or leftovers from last night's dinner. Making a large bean stew in a crockpot is great for lunches and filling, too.
Don't be confused by the math. Most people need about 2400 mg or 2.4 grams of salt each day, 1500 mg or 1.5 grams for the older crowd. One slice of bread can contain your daily allotment, so read those labels carefully. If you wrap two slices of bread around some processed meat and add cheese, no wonder your blood pressure is high. It doesn't matter if you never add salt when cooking at home. If you eat just one fast food sandwich a day, you have probably exceeded the salt you should have.
Ok, I understand how easy take-out food is, but try to lessen the damage by skipping the chips with the sandwich. (Even better, eat the chips and skip the sandwich or split the sandwich with a friend.) Make 1-2 days a week your salad days. Bring a sweet potato to work and microwave it for lunch. Spice it with ginger or cinnamon. You'll love the variety and you may even loose a few pounds.
Like aging, eating healthy is not for sissies or for the faint of heart. But by reading labels, buying more produce, spicing your foods and getting reacquainted with salads, you are taking the positive steps needed to strengthen that faint and precious heart.

Tips for Event Catering

0
By

Event catering is an excellent choice for a multitude of functions. Whether you are hosting a small party with a few of your closest friends or throwing a large wedding reception, catering is a wonderful way of ensuring your guests are well fed with great tasting food. In addition to cooking and serving the food, many catering companies can also help you with setup and cleanup. This is an essential service particularly for large events. Providing a well dressed place for your guests to dine will make a great impression on them as well as facilitate the atmosphere of the party. If you want to have your next gathering catered, here are a few tips for making sure things go well.
Party Size: It is very important that you give your caterer an accurate number of the people who will be attending your party. The amount of food they will make will be based on this number. Although, many event catering companies cook a little bit extra to accommodate people who want a second helping, it will certainly not be enough to handle a significant increase from the original number. To avoid running out of food or having food go to waste, get as accurate a count as you can. This is probably best accomplished by having everyone you invite RSVP that they are coming and whether or not they will be bringing a guest.
Buffet is Better Than Wait Service: It is very impressive to have a staff of waiters personally serve your guests their food. This can also help with portion control and ensuring every person gets a meal. However, this service typically costs more because of the extra personnel the event catering company has to hire and may require a little more effort to make certain everyone gets a meal they will eat. Wait service is best for smaller events. For large events, like corporate gatherings, it is best to have a buffet where everyone services themselves. Not only is it cheaper, it is also much easier to plan and implement.
Quality Over Quantity: If you are on a budget, opt for three really good courses instead of five or more selections. This will save you money and reduce food waste. Most people won't notice that there is no soup or that there is only one dessert if the food that is served is high quality. Additionally, try not to go overboard on the hors d'oeuvres. One or two good appetizers are better than a passel of hors d'oeuvres. The event catering company can help you pick out a great menu for your budget.

Pizza Delivery Is a Convenient Money-Saver

0
By

Waiting on a pizza delivery may not be something that most people desire to do. However, it provides several advantages.
One of the reasons that this method is so advantageous is because it allows you to relax and it is extremely convenient. You don't have to worry about getting up, getting dressed, fixing your hair or doing any of the other things that you usually do before leaving your home. This includes setting your alarm and tying up your dog. Instead, all you would have to do is continue whatever it is you were doing and wait for your doorbell to ring. This is especially important for those who may have been in relax mode.
Imagine if you had just come in from a long day at work. You cleaned up your home, washed dishes and a few loads of clothes before you decided to lie down and relax for a few moments. After a few minutes, you suddenly noticed you were very hungry. How wonderful would it be for you to have someone deliver your food right to your doorstep, without you having to step foot outside of your house? The furthest you would have to walk are the few steps it would take for you to get to your front door.
The pizza delivery method is not only advantageous for the aforementioned reasons, but it is also good because it can help you save on gas. Now, this may not seem like a very big deal to some people. However, in actuality, some may choose to drive across town just to get to their favorite restaurant. With the soaring gas prices, that seems to not be coming down anytime soon, having the option of not using your vehicle is a great way to save money. So, instead of going out and using your own car, you can sit back and allow someone else to do the driving for you. This is even good for those who may choose an establishment that is not far from their home.
One of the biggest reasons that pizza delivery is such as good option is because it allows you to not have to concern yourself with cooking. Whether you were working all day at your job or doing other activities or chores, there are just sometimes that you don't feel like cooking. There are even times you may want a particular meal, but you don't want to spend the money that it will take to prepare it. Some dishes can include a plethora of ingredients and spices. By the time you have finished purchasing all of those things, you would have ended up spending much more than you set out to. So, by ordering this particular food item, you will save yourself time along with money.
So, don't shun the idea of waiting for a pizza delivery. Think about the many advantages it can bring you.

Movies and popcorn go hand-in-hand. This is why popcorn is a great way to make money at your outdoor movie event. Here is what to keep in mind so you can make the most of selling popcorn at your outdoor movie concession stand.
Popcorn Machine Placement
Many people already enjoy popcorn with a movie, but smart placement strategies can help you increase popcorn sales even more. First, choose the best location for your popcorn popper. Make sure the event attendees can see and smell the popcorn by placing the machine in the front of the movie viewing area, or to the side of the movie screen. Be sure not to place the popcorn machine behind the audience, since they will be more likely to buy the popcorn if they can see and smell it.
Another great way to increase visibility is to illuminate the popcorn by keeping the machine's light on. A central location for the machine and proper illumination will make it hard to miss the delicious sight and smell of the popcorn.
Popcorn Popper Appearance
Create a clean and inviting appearance to make the popcorn more appealing. Event attendees will steer clear if the machine is dirty. Be sure to clean the popcorn popper properly after every event to keep it sanitary and increase popcorn sales.
Keep the machine moderately full so that there is an attractive display of popped popcorn. Be sure to pop the popcorn during working hours, and keep the doors open during popping so that stream does not fog up the windows. Be sure to keep the popcorn hot, however, following popping so you can serve customers fresh, hot popcorn to enjoy with the movie.
Containers
Choose the best containers for your popcorn. Try to avoid paper bag containers. It is difficult to display popcorn in paper bags, and serving it this way is also more time consuming since the bags will need to be opened before they can be filled. Popcorn boxes are generally a much better alternative. Offer a large size popcorn box so two people can share.
More Tips to keep in Mind
In addition to popcorn, consider offering a variety of drinks including bottled water and soda at your concession stand. Popcorn makes people thirsty, so offering drinks is a good idea. Attendees will be happy there are beverages available, and you will enjoy additional revenue from the drink sales. Be sure to also highlight the fact that popcorn is a much healthier alternative to candy, another popular movie snack.
Popcorn is a very important part of a movie concession stand. Give your popcorn machine an appropriate spot and place it up front in your concession stand, rather than on a back shelf. This simple change will increase your sales by 30-50%.

4 Must-Try Japanese Dishes

0
By

Once you've decided to take a trip around the world, one of the places you shouldn't miss out on is Japan. It's a land filled to the brim with culture and innovation, blending old school traditions with modern technology. This place offers quite a remarkable experience for any tourist from any part of the globe. One thing that you have to look forward to as well is the food. Japanese dishes are bursting with flavor, although not everyone gets to appreciate it a whole lot mainly due to the idea of having to consume raw food. Yet, that is a generalization and you will want to actually try it out before you come to a conclusion. Below are just some of the dishes you need to try upon traveling to Japan.
Sushi - This is one delicious dish, although the concept of eating raw fish is something that can be off-putting to some people. However, it's definitely hard not to appreciate it once you've tried it. You will want to give yourself a chance with this, especially when you have a wide array of choices as to what you can put in it besides raw fish. There's also crab sticks, mangoes, cucumber slices and a whole lot more. It's definitely one of the tastiest foods you can ever try.
Gyoza - The Chinese have their wanton dumplings, while the Japanese have gyoza. It's not considered as a dish in the strictest sense, although it's certainly a delicacy among the local folk. It's essentially a blend of ground pork, cabbage and garlic stuffed inside a wanton wrapping. When served deep fried, this is certainly something to savor, as the crispiness of the wrapping accentuates that flavors bursting from the inside.
Shabushabu - This is practically the same as a Chinese hot pot, where you get to dip thinly cut meat slices in broth, or even boiling water. Afterwards, you get to dip it in flavored sauce and consume as much to your heart's content.
Ramen - Next to sushi, this is one of the more famous Japanese dishes. It's not instant ramen, though. You get a nice serving of fresh noodles served with toppings such as pork slices, or even some egg and a whole lot of veggies. The soup base would be totally dependent on your preferences, whether you'd opt for miso or even a spicier variant.
These are just four of the many other great dishes to try in Japan. If you're a bit adventurous, you can also take a shot at the very popular "Dancing Squid Rice Bowl". From the name itself dancing, we are talking about now just raw, but the live thing served in a bowl!

Are You Tired of Being Fooled by Pink Slime?

0
By

If you thought pink slime in hamburgers was a dirty secret in the meat industry, you truly have no idea what you are really eating each time you consume meat or dairy products. Unfortunately, the meat and dairy industries have been brainwashing doctors and consumers into believing that meat and dairy provide essential proteins and nutrients that cannot be obtained in a strictly plant based diet. Today, thousands of happy, healthy vegans are proving that there is no need to consume foods that actually cause significant harm to your own health and the environment.
Chemicals Used During the Slaughter Process
When you watch the news about research on the best foods to eat, chicken is likely to be at the top of the list. Since chicken is cheaper, and touted as having less cholesterol than beef, many people mistakenly believe that consuming chickens is a healthy choice. Other than hanging live chickens upside down in boiling water to remove their feathers, did you know that slaughter houses routinely hose chicken carcasses down with ammonia or arsenic? To make matters worse, if you take note of the odor of chicken, you may often detect a chlorine odor. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the smell of chicken blood or the meat itself. Rather, this odor actually comes from a buildup of chlorine in the chicken's body because their feed and water is often laced with chlorine to help control bacterial infections.
Proteins, Vitamin D and B-12
No matter whether you are interested in body building or maintaining a basic level of fitness, you are bound to find all kinds of diets that recommend boosting meat intake as a means to gaining access to as much protein as possible. Surprisingly enough, you can find better quality protein in plant based foods. For example, soy protein contains all of the essential proteins that you need for wellness. As an added bonus, when you make use of plant based proteins, you will usually find fewer issues with tiredness and heaviness that come with consuming meat.
It is often hard to believe the number of people that actually fall for the story about dairy being the only source of Vitamin D in your diet. The fact of the matter is Vitamin D is actually produced by your skin upon exposure to sunlight. All you need to do is take a walk outdoors for a few minutes and you will have plenty of Vitamin D for the rest of the day. Even though plant based foods do not contain Vitamin B-12, animals do not make this vitamin either. In fact, animals obtain B-12 when they ingest bacteria that make this vitamin. Simply consume bread, fortified cereals, or foods that contain nutritional yeast for your B-12 supply.
As time goes by, there is no doubt that pink slime will be the least of the dirty secrets held by the meat and dairy industries. Why should your health be endangered by what you don't know about animal based protein food processing? Instead of winding up with all kinds of horrible diseases, you can enjoy a full, healthy life when you choose a vegan diet instead.

They can give you what you need. Just be sure that you hire a company that is proven to be an expert in the field. To choose the right company, you need to consider these 3 important criteria: (1) The length of time the company is in business (2) The charges and (3) Positive reviews - ask the people you know who are familiar with the company or you can read some reviews online or you can ask for the list of their previous clients and ask their opinion about the service they got from the said company.
Why going for organic catering is important? Here are two huge benefits:
  1. Healthier you - as organic foods (fruits and vegetables) are grown without the use of harmful pesticides or herbicides, you are rest assured that you have healthy foods for you and for your event participants. In addition to that, organic food growers are prohibited from using genetically modified organisms as an aid to growth, making them even safer to consume. Preparing fruits and vegetables assures that what you have are rich in vital nutrients like necessary fibers and vitamins (health and body figure conscious participants will surely like this).
  2. Healthier world - preparing organic foods for the events you have is also a way of saying to your participants to go green or organic, which they, in one way or the other, can also spread to other people they know - your participants can share the 'good news' about going natural to others. It's a way for a healthier world, indeed!
Important: Before you even start preparing vegetarian foods, it makes sense to let your participants know ahead of time about your plan to get some feedbacks. There might some who are really not into organic menu. Making all your participants satisfied should still be one of top priorities.

Reasons to Hire Catering Service

0
By

Event planning is challenging enough. Not only do you have to find a venue for your get together, you probably have to make arrangements for people to get to the location, handle decorations, and a hundred other things to make the party ready for the guests. This also includes making arrangements to feed all of the people who are going to be at the party. If the thought of spending hours over a hot stove making hundreds of pounds of food is not appealing to you, then hiring a catering service is probably the best way to get food for your party.
A catering service can take over many event tasks and provide you with a little breathing room. Their primary service is to make a delicious meal for your guests. Typically, the caterer will work with you to develop a menu that suits your particular festivities. You can then choose to have a buffet style meal where your guests help themselves to the food or you can have onsite staff cooking and serving your guests. In either case, the caterer will be responsible for making enough food to feed everyone in your party. This, alone, will free up a lot of time for you to focus on other things.
Another thing a catering service can help you with is seating. Many catering companies will also rent out tables and chairs for your party. This will save you from having to negotiate with yet another vendor for this. Generally, when you rent the seating from the catering company they will help set it up for your party in addition to setting out the food for consumption. Once the party is over, they will pack up the equipment and take it away. Although this often is an extra cost, you will find that avoiding the hassle of dealing with a chair and table vendor is worth the money.
Lastly, with the internet such a large part of everyday life now, there are some catering companies who will allow you to place your order online through their website. If you are organized enough to know what you want, you can log on any time of the day or night, place your order, and pay for it with a credit card. A representative will generally call you to confirm the order you placed. Otherwise, doing it this way will save you from having to meet with someone face to face about catering service. This can lead to opening up more time for you to work on other tasks.

5 Snacks and Drinks to Avoid

0
By

1. Tea
What could be bad about tea?? Specifically, we're talking about the bottled tea drinks, loaded with sugar and not much else. And claims of ginseng and the like don't help because they're generally included in such small quantities that there's little to no benefit. Always be sure to check the nutrition facts to make sure your healthy tea drink isn't a soda in disguise. Or, if you want to really go for it while saving a ton of money, you could brew it yourself, add in some honey, lemon and other natural ingredients for a tasty alternative.
2. Sugary Dried Fruit
Fruit is tasty and great for you. So it would stand to reason that the same fruit, just dried, would be about as healthy. As with pretty much everything on this list, the idea of the product is good and generally healthy, but it's when manufacturers start piling in all kinds of additives that kill it. With dried fruit, its mostly the same. Whether it's using lower quality fruits from the beginning, or just wanting it to appeal to more people, the now dried fruit gets coated in sugar. You can still snack on dried fruit without all the sugar by choosing a no added ingredients option.
3. Sushi
Kind of naturally, you think of fish based meals as a healthier alternative. And a basic sushi roll prepared right can do just fine. However, many rolls pack on the cream cheese, white rice, mayonnaise and other calorie loaded extras, quickly turning it into a diet disaster. Just be careful, double-check what's all included and you can still enjoy this favorite.
4. Flavored Water
Obviously regular water is just fine, and even many flavored waters are perfectly healthy, but you can easily get into trouble downing bottle after bottle of many flavored waters without looking at the nutrition facts. Some manufacturers add in so much sugar and artificial flavoring that you might as well be drinking a soda. Since um, technically, soda is just water with syrup flavoring that's not too much of a stretch. A good choice of flavored water should be under 10 calories and little to no sugar.
5. Light Buttered Popcorn
So light and fluffy, what could possibly be bad? I mean, it says "light" right on the package! Chemical butter. Not only does it pack on some calories and usually some saturated or trans fat, but the chemical flavoring (dactyl) is bad for you too. How do you get around all the bad and still get to enjoy this snacking favorite? Choose a portion controlled option with natural flavoring.

Popular Freeze Dried Food

0
By

The process of freeze-drying food maintains the smell, taste, and texture and permits long-term preservation of food items. Such food is popularly recognized as astronaut food, and freeze-dried ice cream is a common souvenir at space and technology museums. Lightweight and popular for camping, hiking, and emergency preparedness strategies including long-term storage, freeze-dried food is enjoyed by many on a regular basis and are easily re-hydrated and enjoyed in many ways.
Prepared fruits and vegetables are a popular snack item. Many people enjoy a morning bowl of cereal loaded with fruits such as strawberries and bananas. Dieters are especially fond of freeze-dried fruits and vegetables, because they provide nutritious and convenient, figure-friendly snack options to curb appetites throughout the day. Parents and children alike appreciate these prepared fruits as a healthy alternative to processed, sugar-laden snack foods. These emergency items were originally developed as astronaut food for space exploration, and this fact makes convincing kids to try it very easy.
All sorts of foods are available for emergencies, including meats, grains, fruits, and milk. Without water content, foods are extremely light weight and can be preserved for years. A variety of foods and meal options are available in individual portions for convenient portability. Hikers and camping enthusiasts enjoy freeze-dried meals and snack items for these reasons. Several days' worth can be carried without adding tremendous bulk and weight to gear kits. All items may be enjoyed dry or prepared with water to re-hydrate contents.
Emergency preparedness is a practical approach to surviving in difficult times. To increase comfort, health, and survival odds, many people develop long-term storage plans using freeze-dried and dehydrated foods and other non-perishable items to prepare for the event of an emergency. The aftermath can leave store shelves empty as panicked residents of a community stock up on supplies. Maintaining a supply of freeze dried food is a practical alternative to this behavior and not subject to food spoilage in power outages when refrigeration fails. Options are available with shelf lives over 20 years which makes them a popular emergency food source.
People enjoy this unique type of food every day. This 'astronaut food' is increasingly becoming a diet staple, and a supply of these prepared fruits and vegetables in a pantry ensures a quick and healthy snack is always on hand. Convenient storage and preparation makes it a reliable source of nutrition for all times spoilage is a concern.

Modern Cotton Candy

0
By

Cotton candy or candy floss is a delightful treat associated with happy times, a familiar sight at carnivals and fairgrounds. It's sugary-sweet, and no one seems to mind that it can get sticky. It's a curious puff of ultra-fine threads of sugar that pleasantly melt in your mouth.
Children are enticed by the cloudlike texture, and they're intrigued by how a huge lump of it can immediately dissolve once they stick it into their lips. Adults love it too - they're likely brought back to childhood memories of when the Circus came to town. But the warm, caramel fragrance of candy floss alone is enough to get you excited.
How is it Made
Cotton candy is basically sugar spun into a light and fluffy form and then gathered onto a stick or paper cone.
A candy floss machine is used to spin granulated sugar. The colored sugar (pre-tinted with food coloring) is poured into a rapidly-spinning central bowl and where it is exposed to heat. Sugar caramelizes when heated; the spaces between sugar molecules expand, resulting in a thick, syrupy liquid. The molten sugar is then flung through tiny holes on the central bowl, toward the outer rim at high speed. It cools so rapidly that it doesn't get a change to pull itself back together into crystals, so it solidifies into fine, gossamer-like threads.
The sugary threads accumulate around the inner walls of the outer bowl, like pastel-colored spider webs. Now this is when the machine operator takes his cue: he picks up a stick or paper cone and rolls the threads of sugar around it, forming a fluffy cloud of cotton candy.
The Invention of the Candy Floss Machine and the Birth of it
Before the candy floss machine was invented, sugar was spun entirely by hand. It is caramelized in a pan and then flung with a fork (and sometimes spun on a broomstick). Spun sugar was enjoyed in various confections and desserts since the sixteenth century, but it wasn't quite as fine as cotton candy as we know it today. Making it required a whole lot of time and patience, so it didn't come cheap. It was mostly a luxury, a treat enjoyed only by wealthy people.
The candy floss machine was invented in 1897 by a candy-maker named John C. Wharton and a dentist named William J. Morrison. They worked together to invent a device that would reduce the effort of spinning sugar, for the benefit of candy-makers and candy-lovers alike. They debuted their brilliant innovation in the St. Louis World's Fair in Missouri, U.S.A. in 1904. They demonstrated how to make a fluffy confection they called "fairy floss" - sugar in the form of cotton-like lumps served in wooden boxes. It was a huge success; they sold over 65,000 boxes in six months! The arrival of their machine made spinning sugar easier, quicker, and therefore cheaper, so spun sugar was not just for rich people anymore.
Modern Cotton Candy
The treat has become popular all over the world and called different names. It's known as cotton candy in the U.S.; candy floss in the U.K., Ireland and Canada; fairy floss in Australia; barbe papa in France and sugar thread in Italy.
The modern candy floss machine has evolved to be sleeker, faster and more efficient, but it has maintained most of Wharton and Morrison's original design. Some models have compartments that allow three different colors of sugar in a single run. Larger, heavy-duty machines can produce cotton candy in bulk.
The confection itself has evolved too. Though pink is still the most popular, it now has various colors and flavors - sometimes several stripes of different flavors can come in a single serving. There are even pre-packed mounds of cotton candy that can be bought from grocery stores, but those kinds tend to be less fluffy. Still, there is nothing like freshly-spun candy floss, fluffy, warm and caramel-scented, twirled straight from a candy floss machine.
We absolutely love cotton candy and anything related to it. If you like what I wrote about cotton candy and candy floss, visit my website which provides candy floss machine rental services.

Safely Attaching a Propane Tank to Your Gas Grill

0
By

If you plan to use your gas grill to cook food, you will have to make sure that you are careful when you use it. This is because these kinds of grills use propane, and if you do not have your propane tank set up correctly, then you could end up causing a fire. However, if you follow some easy steps, you will be able to use your gas grill without having a problem.
The first thing that you should do is make sure that you have a propane tank that has enough propane in it, so you will be able to cook your food. If you do not have enough propane in your tank, then you will have to go to the store in order to purchase a new one. Before you start hooking up your tank to your gas grill, you should check to make sure that it does not have any leaks. This means that you should check the hose to make sure that it does not have any holes in it. You may think that this is a waste of your time; however, it is important that you check the hose each time that you use your gas grill. If it does have a leak, then you could end up causing a fire.
Once you have thoroughly inspected your propane tank and hose, then you are ready to attach it to your grill. If you are not sure how to attach the tank to your gas grill, then you should take the time to read the instructions that came with it. It is important that you hook up the propane tank correctly, so you will be able to cook your food safely. Once you believe that you have your propane tank hooked up securely, and then you will have to make sure that you have it tightly in place. You can do this by putting a mix of dish soap and water on each of the areas where there is a connection. You should then turn the valve on for your propane tank. If you find that bubbles are appearing in your soap mixture, this means that you do not have a secure connection. You should then turn off the valve and tighten all of the connections again. You will have to do this until you no longer see bubbles appearing. Once you are certain that everything is connected securely, you can then use your grill.

Using Your Gas Grill Safely

0
By

When the weather starts warming up outside, most people start doing more outdoor activities. For example, people enjoy swimming or going to the beach in the summer. This is also when people decide to cook outdoors. There are many holidays that fall during the summer, and many of these summer holidays are celebrated by people grilling their food. There are many different foods that you can cook on a gas grill, but it is essential that you know how to use one safely before you begin trying to cook food.
Before you begin using your gas grill, you will have to make sure that it is set up in the right area of your yard. You will want to set it up away from any kind of structure that may accidentally catch on fire. This means that it should be set up away from your house, porch, and trees. Once you have found a safe place to use your grill, you will then have to make sure that it is set up correctly.
You will have to make sure that you choose an area of your yard that is level to place your gas grill on. This will keep it from accidentally tipping over. Then, you can place the lava rocks inside of it and put the grill on the top. If you are not sure how much of the lava rocks that you should put into your specific grill, you should read the instructions that came with it. It is essential that you use the correct amount of rocks in it to ensure that it works properly.
Once you have the grill and lava rocks set up, you will have to set up the propane tank. Before you begin to hook the propane tank up, you will have to take time to check the hose. You will want to make sure that the hose is not cracked or broken in any way. If it is cracked, then the propane will leak out of the hose, and this is extremely dangerous. If you have checked the hose, and it seems to be in good condition, then you can continue hooking your propane tank up to the gas grill. Once you have everything ready, you can light your grill. You should make sure that you give it a few moments to heat up before you put any food on it to begin cooking.

There are several ways to consider buying in bulk. For some it means buying products in bulk bins. You grab a bag and fill it with however much you need. Another way to buy in bulk is to wait until an item, whether generic in bins or branded in a container, goes on sale and buy lots of it. Bulk buying also means looking for the largest container of the item you want to buy, assuming that it will make good financial sense.
In general, buying items in bulk does make sense. Bulk foods are often cheaper because suppliers don't spend money on fancy packaging. Often they have no brand recognition, which means companies haven't spent a lot of money on advertising. That cost savings is then passed on to you. But you might want to ask yourself a few questions before you buy in bulk.
How does the price of bulk compare to name brand products? If your bulk item is cheaper than the name brand, than it is worth buying at least the same amount as you normally would. But try to compare the shelf lives of the bulk and brand items. That is, does your item have a date stamped on it that indicates that it should be used by a certain date? If you buy vanilla extract in bulk and it has a one-year shelf life and you never bake, then is the bulk item truly a bargain? Do you want to use up your pantry space on large quantities of items you seldom use?
Look closely at the item you are buying. Read the label. Yes, you have always bought a particular brand, because you like the taste. Now, before stocking up, is the time to look at what you've been eating. If the food is full of the nasty three items used by food processors to add flavor (sugar, salt, fat), then maybe you should rethink buying that item in bulk. Maybe eating all that inexpensive food isn't all that great of a deal in the long term. Perhaps you should factor in the future cost of the medicine (insulin, blood pressure pills, etc.) before you pat yourself on the back for making such a wise financial choice.
Sometimes stores want to turn over inventory that has been sitting a bit too long. You can often find a product in a small container that is cheaper per ounce than a bulk item in a larger container. A particular salsa that I like tends to go bad if I buy it in bulk and don't use it up in a few weeks. Lately, smaller jars have been on sale. In this case I buy the smaller jar, but shop for it more frequently. Don't assume that the large bottle or can will always be cheaper than a smaller amount of the same item.
Likewise, don't be fooled by marketing ploys that get you to buy a name brand because you recognize it and its flavor. You can buy an item, such as generic canned beans or tomato sauce, and save yourself some money by spicing those items to your taste. Often generic items have fewer additives and preservatives.
Many grocery stores will do the math for you on the price label if you look for it. It will give you a price per ounce for all types of applesauce, for example. It is then up to you to decide which is the best deal. Again, do your body a favor and read the label. Is it worth spending a little more to avoid the sugar, salt and fats?
If you have the space and the items you need have a long shelf life, then by all means stock up on them, especially if they are on sale. But if you have a coupon that encourages you to buy large quantities of a name brand, look to see if another brand contains the same ingredients, but is less expensive even after considering the discounted cost with the coupon.
In a world with instant answers at our fingertips, it still makes sense to pause and consider the pros and cons of buying in bulk, when you do your grocery shopping. We all have a tendency to take the easy way out, but it often comes down to your life style. Is ignorance truly blissful or does knowledge give you more power? Try to tip the scale toward the latter.

The Best Bagels

0
By

As a kid in New Jersey it was tough not to consume a lot of bagels. It's a standard in the food intake of lots of people in the Northeast. As soon as I found myself in the ninth grade, I wandered into a bagel shop and I landed my very first job. I was employed at the bagel shop for many years, and I learned a lot regarding the bagel business. When I finished high school I happened to reside in a number of different areas all over the United States Of America. It was always a point to try out bagels from all over the U.S..
One of the best things about bagels is the U.S.'s fast growing popularity of them. As I get older, and continue to travel across the country I see a lot more shops popping up. With all do respect for the big chain stores, I prefer to get bagels at a mom & pop store. Nothing can beat a fresh hot bagel which was made in the back of the shop that day.
The best way to prepare a bagel is by boiling, and then baking it in an oven. This is what I grew up on, learned in my time being employed at bagel stores, and this approach is my desired way of eating them. It is usually very easy to detect whenever a bagel is fresh, boiled and baked. Lots of people claim that they are better in New Jersey because the water. I do think there's a little bit of weight regarding this claim, however I have discovered that when they are prepped and baked the right way, they will taste just great. The optimal combination of crunchy and chewy.
One thing that I have found over time is the shortage of seeds on bagels. It is a fairly scarce occasion when I have a plain one. Because I frequently order sesame, onion, and everything bagels I prefer them to have a lot of seeds. If you can't taste the seed what's the reason for ordering that kind of bagel? While I was employed at the bagel shop I would seed each side of the dough. Some of the seeds slide off when they're flipped in the oven, but both sides should get seeds. Since they lose a lot of seeds is all the more reason to seed both sides.
A reason I enjoy bagels a whole lot is because of their adaptability. They're just great for breakfast, or lunch, and they're an excellent option for snacks. I really like the taste that a bagel adds to a sandwich. I also often make pizza bagels. Just cut it in two, add a little sauce and cheese on it, and pop it in the oven for a couple minutes. Very quickly you have a wonderful snack, meal or appetizer.
The wonderful thing about bagels is that they can last forever. Nothing can compare to a fresh bagel, but sometimes that's not easy. Throughout the North East loads of shops have deals like if you buy one dozen get a 1/2 dozen free. This can often lead to a lot of left-overs. Should this happen to you simply put them in the freezer. When you want to have one all's you need to do is microwave it for a few seconds, just so it is thawed out enough to slice. Immediately after that put it in the toaster, and you will have a good tasting bagel right from the freezer.
Bagel shops continue to grow throughout the U.S., and are rising in popularity just about everywhere. They are becoming more popular because they are to begin with, yummy. They are can also be extremely versatile. They are an excellent option for your morning meal, and are perfect for commutes. By using a bagel you can add tons of taste to sandwiches, and you could also get imaginative and make fantastic little appetizers. Check out the bagel stores in your neighborhood, and try something totally new today!
